The player is then assigned by a character named Dr. When playing as the marines the player takes control of Bravo Squad, a group of elite commandos attempting to wipe out all threats to the local human population, discovering a Predator base in the process. Meanwhile the Alien colony attempts to escape the battles and maintain its dominance over the other races. Minor skirmishes occur between the humans and Predators, escalating into a war. The marines attempt to study the Aliens, unaware that a group of Predators has also arrived on the planet with the intention of hunting the Aliens.
The premise of the game is that a group of Colonial Marines have arrived on a newly colonized world and discovered a colony of Aliens. The facehuggers are spawned from eggs laid by an Alien queen, which can move and attack but is stationary and defenseless while laying eggs. When playing as the Aliens the player gains points by attaching facehuggers to enemy units in order to produce more Aliens and expand the Alien hive. The player can call for new units to be deployed at most visible areas of the map. The Predators have access to more advanced and more expensive technology than the other races, as well as a mobile headquarters. The player can call for additional reinforcements to be deployed at the locations of beacons placed on the map.Īs the Predators the player acquires points by killing enemies and collecting their heads as trophies. When playing as the Colonial Marines the player gains points in the form of credits by capturing additional territory, repairing atmospheric generators, and killing enemies.

Most of the buildings and other structures that the player can create are mobile, and the player is able to upgrade and add special abilities to most of their units in order to make them more effective in battle. Unlike its predecessors, however, which were all first-person shooters, Extinction is a real-time strategy game in which the player progresses their chosen race towards specific goals on a large map, using strategy and control of resources to gain more points than their opponents. The game follows the precedent set by the previous video games Alien vs Predator (1994), Aliens versus Predator (1999), and Aliens versus Predator 2 (2001) of allowing the player to choose between controlling the Aliens, Predators, or Colonial Marines. A real-time strategy game, it allows to the player to assume the roles of either the Aliens, Predators, or human Colonial Marines. Predator franchises to be released for either console.
